In case you weren't already convinced that Netflix was well on its way
to world domination, the latest bit of evidence supporting that theory is the
fact that the company is already streaming last night's Breaking Bad premiere
to folks living in the United Kingdom.
Typically, UK viewers would have to wait one to three days to catch new
episodes of their favorite American shows like Game of Thrones and The Walking
Dead, which has led to a spike in piracy rates for those shows.
Breaking Bad showrunner Vince Gilligan has credited Netflix with helping
to raise awareness of his show and suggests that a huge part of its immense
popularity should be attributed to its availability on the streaming platform.
Thus, they went ahead and struck a deal with the company, enabling it to beam
Walter White and company across the pond as soon as possible.
“We are thrilled to be bringing
the highly anticipated final season of ‘Breaking Bad’ to Netflix members in the
U.K. and Ireland on a first-run basis,” Netflix chief content officer Ted
Sarandos said in a statement. “‘Breaking Bad’ is a once-in-a-generation caliber
of show and continues to be a huge success on Netflix.”
“Breaking Bad” showrunner Vince
Gilligan commented, “Netflix has been instrumental in making Breaking Bad the
success that it is – particularly in the U.K. and Ireland, where it has built
an audience and become a huge phenomenon. I am delighted that fans there will
be able to enjoy the end of ‘Breaking Bad’ on Netflix so soon after it airs in
the U.S.”
